Survey of sailing yachts

The service is tailored to each client, but will typically consist of four phases:

  1. Review of all technical manuals and sales documentation
  2. Yacht inspection both onshore and in the water
  3. Test of the yacht (sailing performance and system operation)
  4. Summary of the survey and client briefing

I have developed at very comprehensive test schedule that covers all aspects of sailing yachts. For each assignment the test forms are adjusted to the individual yacht based on the technical documentation and the clients requirements (e.g. special focus areas). Most often the inspection and test sailing is done together with the prospective buyer where the yacht is based.

New yacht build

Buying a new yacht is a first for many owners and the process is demanding. Larger yachts are very complex and comprise many different support systems and disciplines (electronics, mechanical, hydraulic etc.). My services fall within three areas:

  • Specification of the yacht
  • Monitoring the build
  • Sea trials and hand-over

Specification

Specifying the yacht is a major task that requires a thorough understanding of what is needed and WHAT IS NOT. I work closely with the client to ensure the yacht is tailored to their needs. There is a huge difference between specifying an ocean-crossing yacht and an inshore leisure boat. My main objective is to ensure the specification is understood by both the buyer and the yard to avoid any conflicts at a later stage.

Monitoring

Many buyers will live far from the yard and might not have time for frequent visits to the yard. I provide project management to ensure the yacht is built according to the owners specifications and that timelines are met. I will visit the yard at specific build phases to verify build quality and alignment with the agreed specifications.

Hand-over

When the yacht is ready for hand-over, I will participate in the sea trials to ensure all systems meet specifications and operate correctly. in most cases I will accompany the owner and their family during delivery to allowing for more thorough testing and a better understanding of the yacht.
